The Teng brothers, Jeron (De La Salle University) and Jeric (University of Santo Tomas) battle for the first time at the FilOil Flying V Hanes Cup at the Flying V Arena, San Juan yesterday.

A week before the competition, Jeron said in an interview that it’s his first time playing against his older brother Jeric. “I’m very excited to play with him because we are playing the same position, so more likely na kami ang bantay ng isa’t-isa,” Jeron said.  Jeron, only three years younger than Jeric, says that he and his kuya are really close and have the same interests.

Yesterday, when the first game (NU vs. CSB) is nearly finished, the UST Growling Tigers arrived at the Arena and sat on the audience side before they were assigned their corresponding dug-outs. Jeron Teng arrived together with his brother and the UST Team. Jeron immediately spotted some of his DLSU teammates and went to the opposite side to sit with them.

The UST-DLSU game was tied at the first quarter at 15 points, but the next three quarters were in favor of the Taft squad, with the Growling Tigers trailing behind.

La Salle leads UST at the first half with  39-30. In some brief minutes, the Teng brothers played together on the court but were not seen guarding or even having physical contact with each other.  Most of the time, Kevin Ferrer of the Tigers halts Jeron Teng’s chances of scoring or passing the ball.

In the third quarter, the Archers tightened both their offense and defense as they trailed the Tigers by nine points at 59-50. Jeric Fortuna, the Tigers team captain and point guard, had 100% 3-point shooting scores but were not enough to match the Archers’ performance.

De La Salle University beat the Tigers 78-70. Norbert Torres led the Archers with 16 markers and 12 rebounds. Rookie Jeron Teng contributed 14 points for his new squad.

The returning Tiger, Aljon Mariano was the top scorer of the game with 19 points and six rebounds. Jeric Fortuna scored 13 markers while sophomore Kevin Ferrer had a double-double performance with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior Jeric Teng played for 19 minutes while his rookie brother played a total of 25 minutes.

La Salle’s standing in the FilOil Flying V Hanes Cup is now 2-1 while UST is at 1-3.

DLSU will face University of the Philippines (UP) on May 11, while UST will battle Mapua on May 16, still on the Flying V Arena, San Juan.

Just because I don’t wanna miss a TENG!
